Wear cropped trousers with a longer tunic

Check the space between tunic hem, trouser opening and shoe when combining two shorter or longer proportions.

Cropped trousers beneath a longer tunic create several visible stopping points. The tunic ends, the trousers end and the shoes begin. You can make those divisions clear or allow them to blend, depending on the silhouette you enjoy. Start with the actual garment lengths rather than the size label or a model photograph.

A straight tunic over tapered cropped trousers gives a relatively narrow lower line. A fuller tunic with wide cropped trousers creates more volume. Neither needs to be avoided, but inspect the side view and walk a few steps. Two wide hems may move into each other or create a shape different from the one seen while standing still.

Watch the tunic opening

Side slits let the trouser shape show as you move. Check their height with the waistband and coverage you prefer. If the tunic has no opening, make sure it permits a comfortable stride. The cropped trouser length does not compensate for a restrictive tunic hem.

Try the shoes next. A low-cut flat leaves a clearer gap below the trousers; a trainer or higher shoe occupies more of that space. If the junction feels crowded, compare another shoe before changing both garments. A small adjustment to the trouser length may also be enough, but test it seated and walking before altering.

Colour can connect the outfit. A navy tunic with navy trousers creates a quieter line despite the different lengths. A pale tunic with dark trousers makes the division more visible. With a printed tunic, choosing one colour from the print for the trousers can provide a link without requiring an exact match.

Keep the bag position in mind. A crossbody bag sitting directly on the tunic's side slit can gather the fabric or obscure the opening. Adjust the strap or try another carrying position if that happens.

A useful starting outfit is a straight cream tunic, dark cropped trousers and simple sandals. Wear it for a few minutes, then check whether you keep tugging either hem. If the layers remain comfortable, the proportion does not need to obey a rule about the exact amount of ankle or trouser that must show.
