Jewellery & finishing
Pair pearl jewellery with a cotton shirt by choosing the neckline opening and the scale of the pearls, rather than treating them as occasion-only accessories.

Pearl jewellery can sit naturally beside an everyday cotton shirt. The shirt's plain surface and familiar structure give the jewellery a different context from an evening dress. Start with the shirt as you normally wear it: buttoned higher, open at the collar or layered over a simple top. That choice defines where a necklace will sit and how much space the earrings have.
A short strand can rest inside an open collar, but it should not sit exactly where the collar tips repeatedly brush it. Try opening or closing one button, within the coverage you prefer, and see whether the necklace has a stable place. A longer strand can lie over the shirt, though the button placket may compete with a pendant or knot at the centre.
You can also skip the necklace and wear pearl earrings with the shirt. A small pair gives a different effect from a longer drop. If you choose drops, turn your head and check that they do not catch the collar. The jewellery should remain comfortable when the shirt is worn for normal activities, not only when it is arranged for a photograph.
The scale of the pearls changes the combination. A fine strand can feel like a small finishing detail; a larger strand becomes a clear focal point. With a roomy shirt and broad trousers, a substantial piece can be visible against the larger clothing shapes. With a detailed shirt front, smaller earrings may leave the garment's design easier to see.
Try the shirt with straight jeans, relaxed trousers or a plain skirt before adding another formal accessory. Loafers, simple flats or sandals can keep the combination suited to daytime. A highly decorated clutch and sparkling earrings would create a different mood, but they are not required merely because pearls are present.
White pearls are not the only option. Compare the jewellery you own with the shirt's colour and texture. A cream shirt and warm-toned pearls may produce a soft relationship, while darker pearls can stand out against pale cotton. Use the actual pieces rather than trying to follow a universal rule about which pearl colour belongs with which complexion.
If the shirt has rolled sleeves, decide whether the exposed wrist needs jewellery at all. The necklace or earrings may already be the main detail. A watch can remain a working part of the outfit without needing a matching pearl bracelet.
Handle pearl jewellery according to the maker's instructions. GIA advises protecting pearls from harsh chemicals and abrasion; its care guidance is linked below. Apply personal products before putting the jewellery on, and avoid letting a rough collar decoration rub against it. Store the piece appropriately after wearing rather than leaving it tangled with harder accessories.
The aim is a shirt outfit you can repeat. Try a small change next time—different trousers, one fewer button open or earrings instead of a necklace—while keeping the same jewellery. That gives the piece several roles without making every outfit revolve around it.
