Check the skirt’s stride, waistband and clearance with the shoes and bag you will carry all day.

A long skirt can be comfortable for walking when its shape gives you room to move and its hem stays out of the way. Length alone does not determine that. A narrow skirt with a small opening may restrict your stride more than a fuller one, while an extremely wide hem can require extra attention on steps.
Try the skirt with the intended shoes and walk at your usual pace. Turn, take a larger step and sit down. If you keep shortening your stride, inspect the opening or slit rather than assuming the skirt will loosen during the day. Check the coverage provided by the slit while moving, especially if that matters to your comfort.
The waistband deserves a separate test. Carrying a bag can pull the skirt to one side, and a soft waistband may roll after sitting. Tightening it until it stays put is not always the answer; the skirt may need a different size, adjustment or fastening. A drawstring should be secure without creating pressure you already notice at home.
Steps, buses and restaurant chairs create different demands from a flat pavement. The back hem should not slide under a heel as you climb. If you need to lift the skirt occasionally, make sure you have a hand free rather than carrying several separate items. Do not rely on a small clutch for a day that also requires tickets, a bottle and an umbrella.
A close-fitting crossbody bag may keep belongings manageable, but its position can catch a full skirt. Try it loaded and check both sides. A backpack can leave the skirt freer, although its straps may shift a loose top.
For a straightforward combination, pair a mid-calf-to-ankle skirt with a light shirt and familiar walking shoes. If you prefer the skirt nearly floor-length, have it adjusted to clear the ground in those shoes. A different shoe height can change that clearance, so record which pair suits the hem. The outfit should allow ordinary movement without requiring you to watch the fabric at every step.
