Layer a shirt over a fitted dress

Choose an open, tied or partly buttoned shirt according to how the dress moves underneath it.

A shirt over a fitted dress changes the outline while keeping the dress as the base. It can add coverage, introduce colour or provide a removable layer. Start with a dress that already fits comfortably; the shirt should not be expected to hold it in place or hide a neckline you continually need to adjust.

Wear the shirt open first. Check where its lower edge falls in relation to the dress's waist and hem. A longer shirt creates a vertical frame; a shorter one leaves more of the dress visible. If the shirt is very stiff, its fronts may stand away from the body. A softer fabric will usually produce a different effect, so compare actual garments rather than relying on the label 'oversized'.

Tying changes both length and pressure

If you want to tie the shirt, use a loose knot and check it seated. Pulling the fronts tightly can strain the buttons or create a bulky lump over the dress. A knot may also press against a belt or waist seam. If the fabric is too short to tie comfortably, choose another styling option instead of forcing it.

Partly buttoning the shirt can offer a middle ground. Keep enough opening for your stride and check whether the hem rides up over the dress when you walk. Fine dress fabric can catch against a rough shirt seam or pocket edge; inspect that interaction before wearing the combination all day.

Try a pale blue shirt over a plain navy dress with flat sandals. For a different finish, use a striped shirt over a solid black dress and keep the bag simple. The shirt's pattern can provide enough detail without adding a necklace directly beneath its collar.

Finally, remove the shirt. If the setting or temperature may lead you to take it off, make sure you are happy with the base outfit. Carry the layer in your bag briefly to see how it packs, and check its care instructions before trying to smooth creases with heat. A removable layer works best when both versions of the outfit are usable.
