Fold knitwear so shoulders keep their shape

Fold knitwear according to its shape and weight, keeping the folds broad and the storage space easy to use.

A knitted garment can be difficult to store on a hanger without changing the shape at its shoulders, especially when it is heavy or loosely constructed. Where folding is appropriate for the maker's instructions, give the piece a flat, supported place rather than treating it like a shirt that must hang from two small points.

Start with the garment clean and fully dry according to its care requirements. Lay it on a smooth surface and arrange it without stretching. Fasten buttons if that helps the fronts lie together naturally, but do not pull one side to make the edges meet more neatly. Existing distortion should not be hidden by forcing a new fold.

Fold around the garment's structure

Bring the sleeves inward along a broad line that avoids creating a tight bundle at the shoulder. For a bulky sleeve, let it lie diagonally across the body rather than doubling all its fabric into one small area. Fold the body once or twice according to the available shelf or drawer depth, keeping the folds gentle.

A thick cardigan and a fine knit top will form different packages. Do not force them into identical rectangles simply for appearance. A wider fold may be easier on a bulky piece and make it simpler to lift without disturbing everything around it. Check that buttons or zips are not pressed hard into a neighbouring garment.

Keep stacks low enough that you can remove the item you need without pulling from the bottom under considerable weight. If the shelf is deep, a second hidden stack can make clothes easy to forget. A shallow arrangement or a suitable drawer divider may help you see the pieces you actually have.

After taking an item out, look at the shoulder area and the folds before wearing it. Follow its care guidance for any smoothing needed; do not apply heat or steam merely because it is knitted. Different fibres, finishes and decorations require different handling.

The storage method should be repeatable after an ordinary laundry day. If the system requires elaborate folding that you rarely maintain, simplify it. A supported garment with room around it is more useful than a visually perfect stack that is compressed, hard to access or constantly pulled apart.
