Compare the whole garment, including the lining's coverage and movement, when deciding which summer piece feels right for your day.

A lining can provide opacity, a smoother interior or support for a garment's shape. It also adds another layer of material. An unlined garment removes that layer but may need a separate underpiece for the coverage or feel you prefer. Compare the complete combinations rather than assuming one word on the product page settles the choice.
Look inside both garments. Notice how far the lining extends, whether the sleeves are lined and where it is attached. A dress with a short body lining and unlined sleeves differs from one lined throughout. The outer fabric may look airy while the inside is closely fitted, so inspect both layers at the waist, armholes and upper back.
Sit down, reach forward and walk a little. The lining should move with the outer garment without pulling it into folds or appearing below the hem unexpectedly. If one layer is significantly tighter, it can restrict the outfit even when the outer layer appears generous. Do not judge room from the outside alone.
Check opacity in daylight and in the positions you expect to use. An unlined garment may be entirely suitable for your preference; another may need a slip or camisole. If you add one, try the actual item rather than imagining an ideal thin layer. Its straps, neckline and hem can create their own visible lines or contact points.
Compare how the two options feel over several minutes, within the conditions available to you. A short fitting cannot reproduce an entire humid day, but it can reveal a tight lining, a rough seam or an extra layer you already find uncomfortable. Weather, activity and individual comfort vary, so avoid relying on a fibre name as a guarantee.
Read the care label for the complete garment. The lining, outer fabric and decoration have to be cared for together unless the maker specifies otherwise. A separate underlayer may need a different routine from an unlined dress, which can either help or complicate your weekly plan.
For a long commute followed by a cool office, the useful option might be a garment that works comfortably with a removable outer layer. For a short indoor event, a lined piece with a defined shape may suit the occasion. Make the choice around that use. The best comparison is between outfits you can actually wear and maintain, not between lined and unlined clothing as abstract categories.
