Compare earrings with the hairstyle you intend to wear, because visibility, contact and movement change when hair is loose or tied back.

The same earrings can look very different with hair down and with hair tied back. Loose hair may partly conceal their shape, while an updo exposes their full length and fastening. Neither hairstyle requires a particular earring size. Start with the effect you want to see, then check how the pieces behave against the hair and neckline.
With loose hair, put the earrings on and move your head gently from side to side. Notice whether strands catch around a projecting detail or whether the earring becomes repeatedly hidden. A smooth shape may move more easily than an intricate one, but the actual design matters. If you spend the trial disentangling it, choose another pair or alter how the hair sits.
Judge the earring from the point where it hangs, not only by its measurement on a product page. Two earrings described as the same length may begin at different positions on the ear and end at different points beside the jaw. Try them with the neckline in place so that you can see the remaining space before the shoulder or collar.
With hair tied back, even a small earring can become more noticeable. A large drop may provide all the detail you want near the face, leaving room to simplify a necklace or hair accessory. If you prefer a fuller arrangement, look at the pieces together rather than selecting each as though it were the only focal point.
Take a front and side photograph at a normal distance. Close-up mirror checks can exaggerate the importance of tiny details that disappear in the whole outfit. The photographs may show that a shorter pair remains visible, or that the longer pair adds the line you were looking for.
Check comfort over a little time before committing to a long outing. Hair should not be used to hide a fastening that feels uncomfortable or a piece that pulls on the ear. The most useful earring length is one that creates the intended outline while letting you turn, lean and wear your hair without repeated adjustments.
