Plan an outdoor festive dinner outfit for the temperature after dark, the ground beneath the table and the layers you will carry.

An outfit chosen in the warmth of the afternoon can feel different once dinner moves outdoors after sunset. Check the forecast close to the event and ask whether the seating is exposed or sheltered. Then decide how much warmth you need and whether the extra layer can remain part of the outfit throughout the meal. A small decorative wrap may not do the same job as a jacket.
Try the outfit seated with the warm layer on. A shawl can slip when you reach for food, while a fitted jacket may pull across a blouse or kurta sleeve. Make sure your arms can move without displacing the neckline or drape. If the layer must be held closed with one hand, it may be inconvenient for a long dinner unless you have a secure fastening that suits the fabric.
Find out whether you will cross grass, gravel, paving or steps. Choose shoes you can walk in on that route and check the garment length with them. A broad heel may be easier on some surfaces than a narrow one, but it still needs a stable fit and suitable sole. A long skirt or saree should not trail simply because the shoes chosen for the terrain are lower than the original pair.
If there may be dew or damp ground, keep the lowest edge of the outfit clear where possible. Do not assume a pale hem will stay clean because the meal itself is seated. The walk from the entrance, queue at a buffet and trip back to the car are part of the outfit's use too.
Jewellery can add light around a plain neckline, but test it beside the outer layer. Long earrings may catch a shawl; a brooch can sit uncomfortably beneath a coat lapel. Choose where the detail should remain visible and simplify the other areas if needed. A bag with a strap leaves your hands free when carrying a wrap, provided the strap does not rub delicate fabric.
Before leaving, practise putting the extra layer on without a mirror. If it takes several minutes of rearranging a dupatta or pallu, choose a simpler arrangement. The dinner outfit should still feel complete when the temperature changes, rather than depending on you staying warm enough to keep the useful layer in your bag.
