Wear a long ethnic jacket with trousers

Give a long jacket enough room at the hip and choose trousers that make its side openings work.

The side view often decides whether a long ethnic jacket works with trousers. From the front, an open jacket can create a clean vertical frame. From the side, its hem may catch on a pocket, pull across the hip or cover a trouser flare at an awkward point. Put the full outfit on before assessing the length, and walk rather than keeping the jacket carefully arranged.

Straight or tapered trousers make a useful first comparison because they leave the jacket's outline visible. Wide trousers are another option, but their volume may compete with a flared jacket. If you enjoy that shape, keep the inner top relatively simple so the outfit has a clear centre. There is no need to choose a fitted base solely to make the outer layer acceptable.

Work with the openings

Check whether the jacket is designed to fasten. If it is, close it and sit down. Strain at a single fastening may mean the size or cut is unsuitable over your chosen base. If it is an open jacket, let its edges hang naturally rather than pinning them into a shape they cannot maintain. A belt can change the outline, but it also gathers fabric and may pull the side slits forward.

Look at what the slits reveal when you move. A high slit can show the inner top and trouser waistband from the side. Choose those layers with your preferred coverage in mind. A top that looks long enough from the front may rise when you reach for something, particularly beneath a jacket that grips at the armhole.

For a patterned jacket, plain trousers can repeat one quieter colour from the textile. A dark base beneath a light jacket gives a strong contrast; similar colours create a more continuous line. Compare both in daylight instead of trying to solve the outfit entirely through accessories.

Footwear should clear the trouser hem without becoming hidden under two moving layers. Walk up a step and turn, checking that neither the trousers nor jacket trails. A crossbody strap may pull the jacket open unevenly, so try the bag early. If a shoulder bag works better, make sure its strap does not sit directly on raised embroidery. Once those contact points are comfortable, jewellery can stay as simple or as expressive as the setting allows.
