Wear a straight kurta with tapered trousers

Check the kurta’s side openings and the trouser taper so the two shapes move comfortably together.

A straight kurta with tapered trousers offers a clear contrast: a relatively even upper shape above a lower half that narrows towards the ankle. Start by checking that both garments fit comfortably on their own. A narrow trouser opening should not make the upper leg tight, and a straight kurta still needs room for sitting and reaching.

Look at the kurta's side slits with the trousers on. Their height determines how much of the trouser and waistband is visible in motion. Choose the coverage you prefer and check it while seated. If the kurta has low or no openings, take a full step to make sure the hem does not restrict you.

Set the trouser length with the shoe

A tapered hem can sit above a flat, meet the top of a loafer or gather against a higher shoe. Compare the actual pair you will wear. If the fabric keeps catching on the shoe, another hem length or opening may be more useful than repeatedly pulling it down.

A plain lower half can give a printed kurta room to stand out. With a solid kurta, you might choose tonal trousers for a quieter line or a contrasting colour for a clear division. Cream with navy, olive with beige or two depths of blue are examples to try with existing clothes, not combinations that require new purchases.

A dupatta is optional according to your preference and setting. If you wear one, check that it does not collect over the side slit or interfere with the bag. A simple drape can keep the kurta's straight line visible, while a fuller arrangement changes the overall silhouette.

Keep jewellery near the neckline manageable if the kurta has buttons or embroidery. A long pendant may catch on the placket; earrings can provide detail elsewhere. Add whichever you enjoy after the garment fit is settled.

Walk, sit and put on the loaded bag before approving the outfit. If the kurta pulls towards one shoulder or the trouser waistband shifts, address that practical interaction first. The straight-and-tapered pairing works through its actual fit and movement, not because it is prescribed for a particular body type.

When the trouser detail should remain visible

Some tapered trousers have a decorative ankle panel or buttons. Decide whether you want that feature to show beneath the kurta. A very long kurta may hide most of it, while an ankle-length trouser can leave it visible above a simple shoe. If the detail catches on the shoe or feels uncomfortable against the ankle, its appearance is not enough reason to keep the pairing.

You can also choose an entirely plain trouser when the kurta neckline and hem already have decoration. This leaves fewer competing details to coordinate and often makes the lower half easier to reuse with another kurta. Plainness is a functional choice here, not a requirement that Indian-wear outfits be visually restrained.
