Shoes & bags

Pack a spare pair of shoes without marking clothes

Separate spare shoes from clothing and give their shape a defined place in the bag, especially when the pair has already been worn.

A spare pair of shoes can change a long day, but loose shoes inside a clothing bag create avoidable contact. Soles may mark fabric, buckles can catch threads and a hard heel can press a crease into a folded garment. Pack the pair as an object with edges and surfaces, rather than dropping it into the remaining gap.

Check the shoes before packing. If they are damp, let them dry appropriately before enclosing them; a sealed bag is not a place to finish drying footwear. Follow the shoe maker's care instructions for the material. Wipe or remove loose dirt using a suitable method, then keep the soles away from clothes even if they appear clean.

Give each shoe its own boundary

Use shoe bags or other clean protective covers that accommodate the pair without squeezing the shape. Separate covers can be helpful for heels or buckles because the shoes are less likely to rub against each other. Avoid packing sharp hardware directly beside delicate clothing. A cover should not have a rough closure that merely moves the snagging problem to the outside.

Place heavier footwear near the base of a bag where it will remain stable, taking account of how the bag is carried. Do not balance a rigid heel on top of an embroidered blouse and assume a thin cover will prevent pressure. If the travel bag has a separate shoe compartment, check that it actually separates the contents and leaves enough space for both sections to close.

For a commute with a shoe change, think about the return journey. The shoes you remove may be warmer, dusty or damp after use. Carry a suitable spare cover and keep them separate from clean clothing. If they are wet, avoid leaving them enclosed longer than necessary once you reach a place where they can be dealt with properly.

Pack the pair you will need first where it can be reached without unloading the outfit. At home, practise the change once with the actual bag. If the shoes only fit after carefully folding every garment around them, a different bag arrangement is likely to be easier than repeating that puzzle at the venue.
