Choose block heels for an event on mixed surfaces

Assess the whole block-heel shoe and the event route; heel width alone does not tell you how it will feel on different surfaces.

A block heel can offer a broader contact area than a narrow heel, but the shoe's fit, height, sole and construction still matter. For an event that moves between pavement, carpet and an outdoor area, ask about the route before choosing the pair. Do not treat the words block heel as a guarantee that any shoe will suit grass, gravel or slippery flooring.

Try the shoes with the outfit and walk on the clean surfaces available to you. Notice whether the heel feels centred beneath your foot, whether the upper holds securely and whether the shoe shifts as you turn. If you need to grip with your toes or tighten a strap excessively to keep it on, consider another fit. A short standing try-on will not show all of that movement.

Check height against the whole evening

Choose a height you are already comfortable wearing for the expected duration. A broad heel can still be high, and a lower heel can still have an awkward fit. Think about queues, standing conversations and the walk to transport, not only the seated meal. If you plan a spare pair, check the garment hem with both.

Wide trousers and long skirts need particular attention when changing heel height. The outfit may look correct in the block heels and drag in the spare flats. You may choose a smaller difference in height, a shorter hem or a different outfit. Avoid leaving that decision until the moment you want to change shoes at the event.

Look beyond the heel

Inspect the sole and fastening condition before the day. Worn or damaged parts need attention from an appropriate repair service or may be a reason to choose another pair. Decorative details should not catch the hem when you walk. With a saree or wide trouser leg, test turns and steps where the fabric can move across the shoe.

Colour and finish can then support the outfit. A plain block heel can work across several occasion looks; a decorated pair may become a stronger feature. Choose the one that fits the route and your clothes rather than buying a category name. If the venue's surfaces remain uncertain, plan conservatively around the information you do have and keep the outfit hem manageable.
