Choose a simple Indian-wear outfit for a family lunch

Choose a family-lunch outfit around sitting, serving and the setting, with as much decoration as the invitation calls for.

For a family lunch, the table and the journey often matter more than a formal outfit category. You may be helping carry dishes, sitting on a low seat or moving between an outdoor courtyard and an indoor room. Choose clothing that lets you do those things comfortably. A small gathering can still be dressy, so take the host's plans and your family's preferences into account rather than assuming casual means universal.

A straight kurta with comfortable trousers is one starting point. Check the waistband seated, and make sure sleeves do not trail across the table. If you like wide sleeves, arrange them so you can eat and serve without continually holding them back. A printed kurta can provide enough detail on its own; a plain set can take a coloured dupatta or earrings according to the occasion.

Keep the layers easy to manage

Try the dupatta in the position you will use while eating. A broad front drape may look lovely standing but fall into your lap or across the table when you lean forward. A folded shoulder drape can be easier, provided it stays secure. If a dupatta is optional for your outfit and setting, you can leave it out rather than add a layer that has no purpose for the day.

A saree can also be suitable if it is one you enjoy wearing for a longer seated visit. Choose the blouse and drape for movement, and test any pinned areas before leaving. Avoid treating a heavily decorated or stiff saree as the only way to make the occasion feel special. Colour, a woven border or a favourite pair of earrings can provide the detail you want.

Wear footwear that suits the journey and any request to remove shoes at the home. Fastenings you can manage easily are useful, but secure fit still matters while travelling. Carry essentials in a bag that can be put aside, leaving your hands free during the visit. A final check with the outfit seated will tell you more than adding another accessory: if you can settle into a chair and join the meal without rearranging everything, the combination is doing its job.
