Choose a commuting backpack by its loaded fit, its contact with the dress and the things you need to reach along the way.

A backpack can leave your hands free while wearing a dress, but it also changes the fabric's movement. Shoulder straps may pull a neckline backwards; a low bag may press into a gathered waist or bounce against a full skirt. Try the bag with the dress itself, not only with a convenient T-shirt in a shop.
Load it with the weight you normally carry and adjust both shoulder straps. The bag should sit close enough that it does not swing widely with every step, without pulling the dress tight across your shoulders. Walk, reach forward and sit down. Check the neckline again after moving: a position that needs constant correction will become tiresome on a longer commute.
A smooth, unembellished back gives the bag a simpler surface to rest against. Buttons, bows, raised embroidery or a deep gathered seam may sit directly under the bag. Move the straps slightly to see whether another position solves the contact, but do not force the bag into an awkward height just to preserve an outfit pairing.
Loose ties and scarf ends should not trail into the backpack's zips. Before leaving, open and close the bag once while wearing the complete outfit. A dress with a long back tie might work better with that tie arranged differently, if its design allows it. If the detail cannot be kept clear, choose a bag that does not rest on it.
Match the bag's capacity to the journey. A slim backpack can sit neatly against a straight dress, but only if it accommodates the load. Overpacking can turn it into a rounded shape that pushes the garment away from your back. Keep frequently used small objects in a compartment you can find easily after taking the bag off; reaching behind yourself for a tiny pocket is rarely convenient.
For the visual combination, try repeating one colour rather than matching every accessory. A burgundy backpack can pick up a small element in a printed dress, while neutral shoes keep the lower half simple. Take a side and rear view before deciding. The backpack is part of the outfit from angles the front mirror may not show.
